Founder Rob Hay first set eyes on the property in 1986 as a failed computer scientist who’d just completed a winemaking course in Germany, and managed it as an orchard before the epiphany that saw him recruit family, friends and bemused locals to transform it into a fully-fledged vineyard.
Believing the terroir was similar to that in famous European wine-growing regions such as Burgundy, Alsace and Champagne, he set out to disprove the notion that Gibbston was better suited to farming than wine production. The proof has been in the pinot noir, which has gone down so well the estate now has five vineyards in Gibbston and Cromwell.
